What a DTF transfer is
DTF stands for direct-to-film. As Insta explains in What are DTF Transfers, and How Do They Work?, DTF uses specialised printers to apply ink onto a thin film, which is then backed by an adhesive powder. The adhesive-backed ink is transferred onto garments with a heat press, producing vibrant and long-lasting prints.
The reason the format took over so much of the custom apparel market is scope. DTF handles intricate detail and unlimited colours, reproduces reliably, and works across fabrics — cotton, polyester blends, nylon, leather, and even hard surfaces like ceramics and plastics. There is no screen count, no colour separation cost and no minimum that makes a one-off uneconomic.
The six steps
Insta's published process, if you are printing film yourself:
- Create the design. Vector format — EPS or AI — so it prints clearly and accurately.
- Print onto the DTF film. Load the film and print the design.
- Apply adhesive powder while the ink is still wet, covering the design evenly.
- Cure the powder with a dryer or heat gun per the manufacturer's instructions, melting the adhesive and bonding it to the ink.
- Transfer to the garment with a heat press, at the garment manufacturer's time and temperature.
- Peel the film — immediately for hot-peel film, after cooling for cold-peel.
Insta's own pro tips for the process: use high-quality film and powder, do not over-apply the powder, pre-press garments to remove moisture and wrinkles, use a high-end press for even heat and pressure across the platen, and let cold-peel designs cool completely before peeling. Its blunt framing of the fourth point — cheap heat presses will garner cheap results, and the transfer may not apply properly or may crack and peel prematurely.
Buying finished transfers instead
Steps 1 through 4 require a DTF printer, DTF ink, powder and a curing dryer. Most decorators skip that capital line and buy transfers finished. Insta DTF is that product, and it publishes a tighter specification than the generic DTF window:

Published features: full-colour photo-realistic images, high definition, unlimited colours, short or long run capability, stretchable, printed on semi-transparent film for easy application and placement, smooth satin finish, and non-phthalate / non-PVC water-based inks.
Recommended fabrics: cotton, cotton-poly blends, low-bleed polyester and canvas. Market segments Insta names are licensed graphics, corporate logos, and emblems and labels.

Ordering and pressing
Insta does not publish per-unit transfer pricing. Custom heat transfers are quoted against your artwork, imprint size and run length. Insta DTF has its own ordering form; general enquiries go through the quote form or 562.404.3000.
Check artwork against the published minimums first: 1 pt positive and 2 pt negative for white, 2 pt in both directions for colour. Storage limits apply:
- Keep transfers in their original packaging until you press them.
- Store away from direct heat, sunlight and high humidity.
- Shelf life is one year from the date of shipment.
