Decal, transfer, same thing
In apparel decoration, “heat press decal” is the same object as a heat transfer: artwork printed onto a carrier, applied to a garment or hard good with a heated platen. The word decal usually signals a self-contained graphic with a defined outline — a logo, a badge, a number — rather than an all-over print.
The commercial distinction that matters is not the word. It is whether the decal arrives finished or you produce it yourself. Custom heat transfers from a manufacturer arrive ready to press. Cut vinyl arrives as material you still have to cut, weed and layer.
Why finished decals beat cutting your own
Insta states the case directly: unlike vinyl and cad-cut transfers, its custom heat transfers do not require additional labour and equipment, and they remove repetitive, time-consuming steps — cutting, pressing the transfer for adhesion, and weeding the design to eliminate excess film.
The compounding effects:
- Colour count stops mattering. A four-colour logo is a single press cycle, not four layers registered on top of each other.
- Detail stops mattering. Halftones and fine line work do not survive a blade; they survive a printed decal.
- Labour drops to seconds. Insta describes the entire application as dressing the garment on the platen and imprinting the design.
- Throughput rises. Insta specifies swift recovery between applications, so there is no reheat wait between garments.

Insta DTF is the default answer for most logo decals because it handles unlimited colours, halftones, opaque whites and short or long runs on the same product, printed on a semi-transparent film that makes placement easy.
Applying them correctly
Every family publishes its own window. Insta DTF:

Two habits prevent most decal failures. First, pre-press the garment — Insta recommends this to drive out moisture and flatten wrinkles so the decal seats properly. Second, obey the peel. Insta DTF is peel hot. InstaGlo is peel cold. Getting that backwards damages the imprint at the moment of application.
Artwork minimums for Insta DTF are 1 pt positive and 2 pt negative for white, 2 pt in both directions for colour. Below that, detail closes up.
Ordering, pricing and shelf life
Insta does not publish per-unit transfer pricing. Custom heat transfers are quoted against your artwork, imprint size and run length. Use the heat transfer quote form, the Insta DTF ordering form, or call 562.404.3000.
One genuine advantage of decals over on-demand cutting: leftovers keep. Insta notes excess transfers can be stored and applied on an as-needed basis, which suits uniform programmes with rolling intake. Within limits:
- Keep transfers in their original packaging until you press them.
- Store away from direct heat, sunlight and high humidity.
- Shelf life is one year from the date of shipment.
