The shared deadline
Across Maryland, the target window for a sprinkler blowout is mid-October through mid-November, before the first sustained hard freeze. Overnight lows across the Mid-Atlantic regularly drop below 32°F from late November through February. Any water left in pipes, valves and heads after that point can freeze, expand and crack them.
The window is the same everywhere, but where you are inside it depends on where you live.
Montgomery County: Bethesda, Potomac, Germantown, Silver Spring
Aqua-Bright provides sprinkler winterization throughout Montgomery County, including Rockville, Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Potomac, Gaithersburg, Kensington, Takoma Park and Poolesville.
- Bethesda and Potomac. Both are named in Aqua-Bright's Maryland service area. Properties with more zones take longer to clear, so larger systems are worth booking early in the window.
- Germantown. Aqua-Bright's Germantown irrigation customers get spring start-ups, and the crew returns at the end of the season to winterize the system.
- Silver Spring. Aqua-Bright's Silver Spring service list includes fall winterization with compressed-air blowouts to prevent freeze damage, plus certified backflow prevention testing.
Above-ground backflow preventers are common on Montgomery County homes. They are exposed to wind and cold, so draining them properly is part of every visit.
Howard County: Ellicott City
Howard County is in the same service area, including Columbia, Ellicott City, Clarksville, Fulton and Maple Lawn.
Higher, colder areas such as western Howard County often see freezing nights earlier than communities near the Chesapeake Bay or the Potomac. Ellicott City homeowners, especially on higher ground, should aim for the early part of the window. Irrigation system winterization in mid-October is safer than waiting for November.
What the blowout visit covers
The process is the same in every county:
- Walk through the layout, zone count and controller settings.
- Set the controller to off-season mode.
- Blow out each zone with commercial compressed-air equipment, matching pressure to the head type - rotors, spray heads and drip lines each behave differently.
- Drain the backflow preventer and advise on insulation or a cover.
- Confirm the main shutoff is closed.
- Report anything to fix before spring.
Most residential systems take 45 to 90 minutes.
Booking across the region
Fall is the busiest season for irrigation work, and slots fill quickly from Bethesda to Ellicott City. Aqua-Bright recommends booking in September or early October and sends seasonal reminders to returning customers. Quotes are based on the number of active zones and are given upfront.
The technicians who do the work are licensed, insured and irrigation-trained, and winterization is core irrigation work for them every fall, not an add-on to a landscaping route.
Households with property in Maryland, DC and Northern Virginia can use one company and one process for all of them.
