It was founded in 1829 by John George Howard, who named it after his wife's hometown of Collingwood, England. In addition to having a rich history, Collingwood is well known for its many parks and gardens. The area has been designated as one of Canada’s Top 10 Green Communities.

The Town Centre is home to several restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, banks, pharmacies, and clothing boutiques. There are two shopping malls, West Mall and East Mall, which offer everything from groceries to clothing to electronics. Both malls are open seven days a week.

There are several schools in Collingwood, including three elementary schools (St. Joseph School, St. Mary School, and St. Patrick School), one middle school (St. Paul Catholic Academy) and one secondary school (Collingwood Secondary School).

In 2012, Collingwood was ranked number four in the world for best places to live according to MoneySense Magazine.
