1. The Paul Robeson House in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is an historic site dedicated to the memory and legacy of singer, actor, and civil rights activist Paul Robeson. Built circa 1850, it was later purchased by Robeson and his family in 1949, becoming their home while they resided here until Robeson’s death in 1976.

Today, the site includes a museum that celebrates his life and accomplishments as an artist and advocate for civil rights. Visitors can explore the house with audio tours, view artifacts like manuscripts and original photos from his life, read quotes from his essays and speeches on panels throughout the house, or watch short videos about his career highlights. The museum also includes two theatre spaces where visitors are treated to screening of archival footage of Robeson performances.

2. The Lower Swedish Cabin, located in Drexel Hill, PA, is an amazing piece of history that stands today as one of the last surviving log cabins still standing in America. Built by a Swedish immigrant around 1725, it is believed to be one of oldest surviving dwellings built by Scandinavians on the east coast. It is registered on the state and national historic registers as a rare surviving example of what was a mode of Scandinavian construction on this continent before more advanced wood-framed construction came into common use in later decades.

In its nearly 300 years standing through wars and natural disasters, it has only been altered three times; beginning with a timber-framed full balcony at the front in probably 1810-1820 followed by an extension for servants or children’s quarters added sometime between 1800 and 1900, and recently a new roof was added to protect from storms. The Lower Swedish Cabin remains much like it looked over 250 years ago serving as living history to millions who visit each year.

3. For something different, try the Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse (smithkidsplayplace.org). This special museum is part touch museum and part playground, so there really is something for everyone here! Children can explore indoors, discovering a laboratory and pet shop within the playhouse part of the museum. Different activities, such as cooking and driving, are also available onsite for an engaging experience. Outdoors, the Smith Memorial playground offers more than six acres of fun with giant slides, swings and climbing ropes that children will love exploring.

4. For kids who like a bit more suspense and adventure, try visiting the Eastern State Penitentiary (easternstate.org), located less than 10 miles away from Upper Darby. Although it was once used as a functioning prison with prisoners such as Al Capone being held there during its operation, this 19th-century building is now open to visitors as a museum with daily tours available throughout the year apart from major holidays like Easter and Thanksgiving. Special events also take place at this location during summer months, such as the Bastille Day celebration in July or various haunted ghost tours during the Halloween season — parents may find their older children particularly excited about these occasions!

5. Philadelphia’s Please Touch Museum (pleasetouchmuseum.org) is a terrific choice for toddlers and their parents, as it offers six interactive exhibit zones full of objects, activities, and games. Kids can play doctor in the City Capers section or shop at a mini-supermarket while they explore Roadside Attractions. They can even jump into a garbage truck in River Adventures. In the centre of the museum's café sits an enchanting 1908 carousel open to everyone both kids and parents – to ride it.

6. Older children will enjoy learning about Philly’s 19th-century maritime history at Independence Seaport Museum (phillyseaport.org), which also offers boat rides and other outdoor activities on weekends. Both museums allow kids to have hands-on experiences that make learning fun and memorable!

7. If you're looking for something a bit more cultural, try the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center (udpac.org), founded over 30 years ago with a mission to promote artistic growth by bringing inspiring works from diverse genres to young people and families at an affordable price range. The Performing Arts Center regularly offers children's productions, including puppet shows, musicals, Christmas specials, original programs about African American culture, live visits of kids' favourites such as Clifford the Big Red Dog—and so much more!

8. In the midst of West Philadelphia’s Victorian-style rowhomes, there lies a secret haven for migratory and local bird species alike. Known as the Spruce Hill Bird Sanctuary, the urban oasis is home to both ordinary and rare birds. In the mornings, cardinals and blue jays flutter around in clusters while black-capped chickadees search beneath gnarled branches of weathered trees. Even more recognisable visitors like woodpeckers, hawks, owls, starlings and wild turkeys have been spotted here year-round.
