H-Beams. H-beams are one of the strongest steel beams. It is composed of horizontal elements and the web by vertical beams. Popular in civil engineering and construction, the web and flanges create a cross section that is similar to the shape of the letter H.

In many types of structures, material strength is more important than weight. I-beams, which look like a capital "I", in cross-section, are often used in bridges and buildings. Although it is lighter and heavier than a regular beam, an I-beam is almost as strong and rigid.

Lightweight coping saws have a thin blade that is ideal for cutting intricate shapes and curves. Although coping saws can be easy to use, they can be intimidating.

Douglas fir is perhaps the strongest of all wood beams. Although there may be a stronger wood, I don't know of any. Lumber mills today make beams in the same way as plywood. To make extremely strong structural engineered timbers, they use layers of solid wood that have been glued together.

I-Beam. . . . This is the ultimate beam profile. It is extremely strong in the vertical direction and has an equal response to all other forces. It is the strongest profile in strength to weight (vertical), making it an excellent DIY beam profile for Cranes and main beams for long and large trailers.
